Statement from Donna M. Nesselbush
Today I am excited to officially announce my strong interest in becoming Rhode Island’s next Lieutenant Governor.
Having served 10 years in the Rhode Island State Senate, 16 years as a Municipal Judge for the city of Pawtucket, 21 years as a small business owner, and, most importantly, with over 40 years as a proud Rhode Islander, I believe I bring both the experience and perspective necessary for the job.
Rhode Island’s economy -- particularly small businesses -- has been hit hard by the pandemic, and we will need to think outside the box to find innovative ways to rebuild and revitalize Main Street.
With this vacancy, we have a unique opportunity for the next Governor and Lt. Governor to work together as partners to accomplish the Herculean work that lies ahead of us.
Lt. Governor Dan McKee has been a fierce advocate for small business, a passion I share. If appointed, I’ll continue his important work while forging new paths towards a healthier and more prosperous Rhode Island.
It’s imperative we find a qualified woman for this role. If not, 12 out of Rhode Island’s 13 senior elected officials will be men. That’s less than 8%, a statistic that is simply not representative of our state and is, in a word, unacceptable.
As a gay woman, my appointment will ensure women and the LGBTQ+ community will have a seat at the table as we shape our future.
In a time of great loss and upheaval, I promise to lead with a spirit of partnership -- rather than politics -- to heal and build back an even better and stronger Rhode Island.
Together we can accomplish anything! Juntos podemos lograr todo!
